Welcome back to Old School Junkie to all of our fans, friends and supporters. We’ve got a great device review for you today. With the trending movement towards everything video many companies are trying to find solutions for the everyday gamer and YouTube enthusiast. With that let’s get to the review of the Roxio Game Capture HD Pro.
The first thing that we should talk about is what comes inside of the retail package of the HD Pro. You would think that a device with so many features that you’d have a bunch of setup equipment. Fortunately with today’s technology we get easy to use gadgets with simple installation processes. Let’s take a look at the content you get.

There you have it, hardware and software to begin your journey as a Game Play video producer. Now that you know what you’ll get when you make your purchase, let’s move on to what you can actually do with this gem of a capture card. You can capture game play from just about any device that has an component or HDMI output with supporting resolutions of 480i/480p/576p/720p/1080i/1080p with the exception of 1080p all other resolutions are captured at a rock solid 60 frames per second. 1080p will only capture at 30 frames per second as the only option.
With that being said, 1080p at 30fps is more than enough for most situations if you use sites like BlipTV or YouTube. You’re still uploading a super crisp full high definition quality video for the world to see. If you truly want to capture at 60fps then just go with either 720p or 1080i and you will be able to get great captures of content that has fast action movement like military first person shooters or fighting games.
In our testing we found that 1080p at 30fps is perfect for games that aren’t heavy on fast action scenes like role playing games or real time strategy gaming, just to name a few options.
But of course these are just our findings, you can capture any type of game in full 1080p @ 30fps that you wish to capture.
Before we get to the good stuff let me “briefly” talk a bit about the editing software. After all, without a good editing suite, capturing game play footage would be moot.
Here at OSJ, we’ve used many video editing programs ranging from the basic to the very advanced in form of Adobe’s Creative line.
What you get with the HD Pro is quite deep but yet user friendly. You won’t have to of had any previous experience with video editors to jump right in.
Check out my video below for a demonstration.
Finally we take a look at the actual real time captures taken with the Game Capture HD Pro. Now mind you, I’ve uploaded these videos in their original format of m2ts, to show you a close as possible original game capture with no edited effects or enhancements. All of these videos where taken from the Xbox 360 via HDMI, I didn’t bother to sample the quality of the component connection. Almost all of our requests were to show how the HDMI capture quality was instead of component.

There you have it.! Great video quality and some pretty high end software to help open the doors for new and first time video producers and hobbyists. As you all know we don’t do rated reviews here on OSJ, we like to give our thoughts and opinions about a product and then let you the reader decide for yourself whether or not it’s the right choice for your needs.
If you asked us, Would we recommend this capture device over other similarly priced capture cards? Then the answer would be 100% yes. With the ease of use, the option to capture directly from HDMI instead of those bulky analog component cables, what’s not to love.
With the huge bonus of the integrated live streaming functions via TwitchTV you get a whole lot of bang for your buck.
As a final note, we did everything for this review on an aging Core2Duo 2.4Ghz laptop with only 4GB ram running Windows8 64-Bit. This is a testament to the high quality software, drivers and hardware that Roxio is bringing to the capture market. Go grab the Roxio Game Capture HD Pro and start showing the world those memorable gaming moments. The price of admission is truly as low as you could get for an HD capture card with built-in streaming capabilities.
